Shorty is a simple application which convert your lengthy URLs and permalinks into more simple and human readable version. It’s like saying “excellent” instead of “supercalifragilisticexpecialidocious”.

Tiny URL has been there forever but it’s being ran elsewhere and if their server crashes or simply decide to call it off, there is nothing you could do since you don’t have control over it. Shorty is a software that you run on your own server so it depends solely on your administration.

Here’s how to install Shorty on your blog or website:

Download the Shorty application files and extract the zipped contents in your local folder.

Open the configuration.php file and change the login details according to your server configuration.

Upload the Shorty application files on your server via FTP.

Call the _install.php file by keying in the URL in your browser.

Create your login name and password and that’s it.

To create a Shorty URL:

Key-in your lengthy URL in the text field.

You could opt to assign a certain keyword (this is useful if your cloaking multiple URLs from a single domain) or have Shorty randomize it for you (in this case proceed to step 3)

Click the Get URL button.

Now why do you want to use Shorty?

1. This is useful in cloaking your affiliate links so to avoid loosing your affiliates.
2. To make all things bright and beautiful.
3. To make some pathetic commenter angry for whatever reason they may have for being angry.
4. Put your reason here.

So is Shorty for free?

Shorty is a freeware developed by Khoi Vinh and Reed Morse just so everyone could be happy. Now if they made you happy and you want them to be as happy as you, you could do so by offering your shorty donations.

As the name implies, Paid to Click networks pay you for clicking advertisements. The general payment rate is $0.01 for every ad you click and read for at least 30 seconds while you earn $0.005 per every ad your referral click for the same amount of time. Members will be given 10 ads to click and read for a day with would give you a daily income of $0.10.

If you will look at it as is, these Paid to Click programs seem to give you too little income per day but it you will look at a bigger picture, the potential is rather great if you will consider growing your network.

Let’s say you have managed to click all of your assigned ads, you are about to earn $3.00 in a month (30 days x 10 ads x $0.01 per ad). Meanwhile, you’re also earning half of what your affiliate clickers are earning. Say, you have at least 10 registered affiliate clickers, your will earn another $15.00 in a month (10 referrals x 30 days x 10 ads x $0.005 per ad). Your monthly earning plus half of your affiliate earnings will earn you $18.00 in a month.

Imagine how much would you earn if you are to have more than a hundred affiliates getting paid to click for you and for each of them?

Aside from this, Paid to Click networks also provide other opportunities for you to increase your earnings. Some of them offers Golden Membership which would at least double your normal income. Others allow you to earn from your third, fourth or fifth level affiliates.

Here’s a rough list of PTC Networks:

What if you will join more than one Paid to Click network and have all your affiliates to join all of them as well. Wouldn’t that be additional earning multiplier?

When these Paid to Click networks came into existence, PayPal has declined to work with them so members had to opt for another payment system such as Alert Pay and the likes but recently PayPal has approved to work with verified clients.

So invite all your friends, your whole family, your country’s president and the whole country. But remember to sign-up either with PayPal or AlertPay to ensure your payments.

Thinking for the most exquisite domain name? Why not these words:

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, a lung disease caused by inhalation of very fine silicate or quartz dust. Other than that, this word’s purpose is to serve as the longest word. I have recited this perhaps for a thousand times since I learned it from high school. I can recite the word without pausing to catch my breath or even while half asleep or lucid dreaming.

I have a strong feeling that this word has been invented to top the previous longest English word antidisestablishmentarianism which was defined as the principles of those who oppose the withdrawal of the recognition or support of the state from an established church, usually used in referring to the Anglican Church in the 19th century in England.

Antidisestablishmentarianism used to be longest word in the English dictionary but thanks to our medical experts, pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis currently owns this title.

How about supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? It’s not even an English word but Microsoft Outlook spelling checker recognizes the spelling.

Can you spell all of them without pausing?

Oh well. It’s been a while since my last update. To kick things off, let me tell you what happened.

I’ve been on a blogger’s block. Not the blogger’s block that they used to say when a blogger suddenly runs out of ideas to write so they got to write nothing leaving their blogs without any updates. I actually had a blogger’s block that someone in some particular geographical points where a state or a country filters contents from the cyberspace and the unsuspecting victims got to be blocked by some great force or another. Well from where I am, we call it The Great Firewall of China. I’ve actually written every detail in this post. Ooops! No links here for now. The new domain should actually be left a secret until the big day. For now, I’ll be prepping it up for the big announcements.But let me just say that I got past the GFW now.

So now, once again, I’m back to blogging.

Anyway, just not to be kept out of the happenings, there has been a Google Page Rank update recently. Don’t know exactly when did it happened but when I woke up this morning, I just got an urge for a PR check and what do we get? A PR3.

It’s not like it’s still something worth celebrating about. PR nowadays is just a Google number that not so much people wanted to care about. Well maybe I still care about but not as much as I did during it’s first years in existence.So this post is to just let you (my usual visitors and those who just got here by mere chance) that I’m back in business and I got a hell lot of updating to do.By the way, I will be closing a lot of domains soon and will leave just this blog and the one we’re about to announce soon. The rest of the domains will be redirected here or the other. See you later, peanut butter!

If you’re blog is already running with Wordpress 2.5, I bet you must have created tons of image galleries within your posts already. Otherwise, it could be because you have disliked how the gallery post, the inside gallery pages and all its elements looked like. If that’s the case, I’m 99% sure that your Wordpress Theme is not Wordpress 2.5 compliant.

A Wordpress 2.5 Compliant theme must have an image.php template file. Having just a single.php template is not enough for you to be able to optimize the looks and functionality of your Wordpress 2.5 Image Gallery. Without this new file, your image gallery would only look as dull as this as compared to the screen shot below. And how to make an image.php template file is what we’re going to expound in this entry. But fret not, for creating this image.php template file is easy, even a faint-hearted soul would not have much trouble if the necessary procedures are followed.

First, you’ll have to make a duplicate copy of your single.php template file and name it as image.php.

Sample Wordpress 2.5 Image Gallery post

Sample Inside page of a Wordpress 2.5 Image Gallery

Now in order to make your image.php template file to display and work like the one on the sample gallery screenshot, you’ll have to make a few necessary replacements with the elements. Wordpress 2.5 Gallery have six major elements and if properly positioned in the image.php template file, the result is undeniably breath-taking. Now, the six major elements of a Wordpress 2.5 Gallery are the following:

Full sized image;

Image title;

Image caption;

Image description;

Previous image thumbnail navigator; and

Next image thumbnail navigator.

On you newly created image.php template file, look for the line similar to this:

<?php the_content(’<p class=”serif”>Read the rest of this entry »</p>’); ?>

You what it is right? It’s the post content element which displays the content of your blog entry. Now replace it with the following lines:

<p class=”attachment”><?php echo wp_get_attachment_image( $post->ID, ‘large’ ); ?>
<p><?php if ( !empty($post->post_content) ) the_content(); ?></p>

The first one pulls out the corresponding full sized image and displays it in the inside pages of your Wordpress 2.5 Image Gallery. The second line captures and prints the corresponding image description. This will be ignored when you didn’t create a corresponding description for the image during your upload.

Now for the previous and next image navigation, check your newly created image.php template file for the previous and next post navigation code which is similar to these:

<div class=”alignleft”><?php previous_post_link(’« %link’) ?></div>
<div class=”alignright”><?php next_post_link(’%link »’) ?></div>

and replace them with these:

<div class=”alignleft”><?php previous_image_link() ?></div>
<div class=”alignright”><?php next_image_link() ?></div>

Done?

Now do the necessary template styling as you please, save the file and upload it in your blog’s template folder.

This is the first part of my will be series featuring different Wordpress Themes and on this entry, I’ll be featuring the Wordpress Themes that I’ve used since I began blogging with Wordpress.

I could not remember the time frames when I did use the following themes so I’ll just lay the list out and add a few Pros and Cons. And of course, these are my personal opinions. Though I am Blog Almighty - Ruler of the Cyber World, I am giving you my word but you have free will for you to decide.

Travelogue by Josh Lyman

PhotoBloggo by ChiQ Montes

Vistered Little by Nik Iliadis

SoSuechtig (Black Edition) by Patrick Queisler

Mimbo by Darren Hoyt

Travelogue is one of the pre-installed theme when you auto-install your Wordpress Blog from your Netfirms account. What I liked about this theme is the customizable Polaroid photo on the header. I have used this theme for some time but I had to discontinue because the post body area is of flexible (fluid) width and at that time, I’m only starting with Wordpress and I didn’t want too much customization. This is highly re-commended for photo bloggers or if you don’t care about having your text dis-oriented when someone reads you in higher resolution monitors or if someone just love playing around with the window panes.

Photobloggo is another Wordpress theme designed for photo bloggers. You’ll just love the dark and yellow combination of colors. Now I can’t remember why I stopped using this theme.

Vistered Little is the first theme I ever really loved because of it’s neat and clean graphic features, the glass-like design and the varying background images. However, from mine and my readers’ point of view, the theme takes a lot of time to load. Most probably because of the heavy scripts and high resolution images.

SoSuechtig is one of the neatest Wordpress Themes I’ve ever used. Almost every function a Wordpress user would ever want is present. However, since the codes are written in German, customization could be tedious unless you have the patience of a Golden Retriever? Well, are golden retrievers really that patient?

Then came the first ever free Magazine Style Wordpress theme I ever laid eyes on – Mimbo by Darren Hoyt. I loved the use of the custom thumbnail, the flexibility of the side bar (being able to truncate the contents into several parts and make each part visible only to index, single and page pages). I’m still using the theme for my personal/photography blog and even if the theme per se could not support the inside WP Gallery pages, I’m not having any plans to replace it with another (or not for now).

Parting words: When you’re using a free Wordpress Theme, do not remove the links placed by the author. It is one way of showing gratitude and it is only rightful to give the theme developer proper credits for their work. If for some reason you can’t leave the links intact, then you might as well not use them at all. Hint: Some theme developers are releasing free themes though there were paid by advertisers to insert their corresponding URLs. Just take this theme for example and take note of the links on the footer.

I am Blog Almighty and I have several blogs of which one of them has been running on 2.5 for some time now and there hasn’t been any major troubles going on though I’m still observing under the process of observing if there would be some back-end effects for the front end seems to have no problems at all. Rumor has it that this upgrade would kill some plugins though none of what I have been using was affected.Anyway, if you’re planning to upgrade your Wordpress versions, I suggest you do it first on a test blog. Why, because no one can make sure what would happen after you do and things get really messy if you’re not prepared. For most forum threads that I’ve been reading, I see a lot of people whining about a few bugs, their plugins not working and the inside pages of their gallery is not displaying correctly.

Well, I have already blogged about my WP2.5 upgrade here and I’ve already said that the upgrade, aside from the WP Gallery, there really isn’t any major inclusions that would make be jump for joy. And for the WP Gallery, it’s not working properly on my Mimbo theme so I made a few hacks and tweaks on the WP include files as what I’ve seen on one of the WP forum threads. Usually, the WP Gallery should work as this, but mine is working as this through the courtesy of Lightview Plus plugin.

Here’s a few pointers that you should remember about the Wordpress Gallery (or should I say not-so-FAQs but should-be-FAQs):

You don’t create Wordpress Galleries. You just upload multiple photos and Wordpress will do it automatically for you.

You could alter the thumbnail dimensions though your admin page. Go to Settings » Miscellaneous and change the Thumbnail size setting. The default is a square thumbnail of 150 x 150 pixels.

To insert the created gallery in a post, you simply place [ gallery] without the extra space of course. And yeah, there’s a written documentation on using the gallery shortcodes.

Previous and next image navigation codes are <?php previous_image_link() ?> and <?php next_image_link() ?> as opposed to <?php previous_posts_link() ?> and <?php next_posts_link() ?> for previous and next post navigation.

Wordpress 2.5 upgrade is not for the faint of heart though most issues could be avoided if you’re informed of what could happen.
